BRICKLAYING & LANDSCAPING IN EDINBURGH AND THE LOTHIANS

Patios, driveways, garden walls, fencing and slap throughs, built properly by a local Loanhead team. Free, no-obligation quotes.

We're Edinburgh Bricklaying & Landscaping, local bricklayers & landscapers in Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Lothians, with over 14 years' experience turning outdoor spaces into practical, good-looking gardens. We listen first, then plan around you.

Most of our work is the solid, structural side of a garden: the patio you'll use every summer, the wall that has to hold back a bank of soil, the driveway that takes a car every day. That's where shortcuts show within a year or two, so it's where we take the most care. Run by bricklayer John McDaid from Loanhead, we cover Edinburgh and roughly 25 miles around it.

Trusted bricklayers & landscapers in Edinburgh, Midlothian and beyond

Customers across the city and the Lothians keep coming back to the same few things in their reviews: we turn up when we say we will, the job comes in at the price we quoted, and the site is left tidy. We also get credit for suggesting ideas the customer hadn't thought of, which is the benefit of having one team that does both the brickwork and the landscaping.

We've laid patios in Queensferry, Musselburgh, Corstorphine and off Leith Walk, rebuilt collapsed boundary walls in west Edinburgh and formed new openings inside homes across Midlothian. Every job is quoted in writing after a site visit, so you know exactly what's included before any work starts.

Why the groundwork matters in an Edinburgh garden

Edinburgh gardens are hard on poor workmanship.

Clay-heavy ground holds water, winters bring repeated freeze-thaw, and plenty of gardens across the city slope enough to push against any wall at the bottom. A patio laid on a thin bed of sand, or a wall built without a proper footing, can look fine on the day and start moving after the first winter.

So the part of the job you never see gets the most attention. Patios and driveways are dug out to the right depth, built up with compacted sub-base and laid to a fall so water runs away from the house. Walls go on concrete foundations sized for the height and the ground. Retaining walls get drainage behind them so water pressure doesn't build up. It takes longer, but it's the difference between work that lasts five years and work that lasts twenty-five.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new patio, wall or driveway cost?

It depends on the size, the materials and how much ground needs to be dug out or levelled first. Access matters too: a back garden reached only through the house takes longer than one with side access. We give a fixed written quote after a free site visit, so you know the cost before you commit.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry public liability insurance with AXA, verified by TrustATrader. We're happy to show the certificate before work starts.

Do I need planning permission for a wall or fence?

Often not. In Scotland a wall or fence up to 2 metres high is usually permitted development, but anything over 1 metre in front of the house where it faces a road needs planning permission. Conservation areas and listed buildings have tighter rules, and much of central Edinburgh is in a conservation area. We'll flag it at the quote stage if we think you need to check with the council.

How far do you travel?

All of Edinburgh and roughly 25 miles from Loanhead: from Queensferry in the north to Dunbar in the east, Livingston in the west and Peebles and Galashiels in the south. If you're just outside that, ask anyway.

How we build

What's under the slabs matters most

Drag the slider: the work you never see is what keeps a patio flat for years.

  • Dug out to the right depth for the ground and the use
  • Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, laid in layers
  • Falls set so water runs away from the house
  • Full mortar bed and pointed joints
